Body fat percentage

The fat level changes the silhouette, the face, the metabolism and the hormonal environment. In men, too much fat hides muscle definition, enlarges the waistline and softens facial contours. Too little can degrade energy, libido and recovery when energy intake becomes insufficient.

What is body fat?

Adipose tissue is an organ that stores energy, releases fatty acids when the body needs them and secretes hormones and signaling molecules.

Adipocytes store energy in the form of triglycerides. When energy intake exceeds expenditure, part of the energy is stored in these cells. When the body must mobilize its reserves, triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol then released into the blood. Insulin promotes storage and slows down lipolysis; catecholamines participate in the reverse signal.

Losing fat therefore means maintaining a situation for a long enough time where the quantity of fat mobilized exceeds that stored.

Why do we need fat?

Fat serves as an energy reserve, protects certain organs, participates in thermal insulation and is involved in hormonal signaling.

Adipose tissue produces, for example, leptin, which informs the brain about energy reserves, adiponectin, linked to insulin sensitivity, as well as numerous cytokines and adipokines.

How does fat increase?

Adipocytes can grow larger by storing more triglycerides. When the tissue must continue to expand, new adipocytes can also form.

As long as the subcutaneous tissue can store the excess properly, it acts as a buffer. When this capacity is exceeded, more lipids can end up in the liver, muscles and other tissues. This ectopic accumulation contributes to insulin resistance and the metabolic complications of excess fat.

Two men with the same fat percentage can therefore have different profiles depending on the amount of visceral fat, subcutaneous storage capacity, muscle mass and genetics.

What is the difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat?

Subcutaneous fat is found under the skin. This is the one that we pinch on the stomach, hips, legs or face.

Visceral fat is found deeper in the abdomen, around the organs. It is more metabolically active and its excess is more associated with insulin resistance, inflammation and cardiovascular risk.

When it comes to appearance, subcutaneous fat determines much of what we see. For health, visceral fat matters more.

A man can therefore have a belly bulging with a significant amount of visceral fat without having a huge fold of subcutaneous fat.

Why do men store more in their stomachs?

The distribution depends on genetics, age and sex hormones. Men have on average more abdominal and visceral fat. Women before menopause store more subcutaneous fat in their hips and thighs.

Estrogens promote more subcutaneous and gluteofemoral distribution. Their decrease after menopause is accompanied by a shift towards more abdominal and visceral fat in women.

In humans, androgens also participate in the control of body composition. Low testosterone is associated with more body fat and abdominal fat, while testosterone promotes lean mass.

Does fat itself change hormones?

Yes. The relationship works both ways.

Adipose tissue contains the enzyme aromatase. It transforms androgens into estrogens: testosterone can be converted into estradiol and androstenedione into estrone. Aromatase expression in adipose tissue increases with adiposity in several studies.

Excess fat can therefore modify the male hormonal environment. However, it would be wrong to summarize the mechanism as “fat transforms testosterone into estrogen”. Several pathways act in parallel.

Why can excess fat lower testosterone?

Aromatase is only part of the mechanism. Excess fat, insulin resistance, inflammation, and changes in leptin can disrupt the hypothalamus–pituitary–testis axis that controls testosterone production. Obesity also often lowers SHBG, the protein that transports sex hormones, which reduces measured total testosterone.

A loop can then appear:

More fat → more adipose tissue dysfunction, insulin resistance and hormonal disruptions → lower testosterone → less favorable body composition → easier fat storage.

This loop is not irreversible. In men with overweight or obesity, weight loss is associated with an increase in total and free testosterone.

Does more estrogen in men necessarily mean more fat?

No.

Estradiol is also necessary in humans. It participates in the control of fat mass, bones and sexual function. A rate that is too low is not desirable.

Excess fat can increase local aromatization, but blood estradiol levels do not always simply follow the amount of fat, because testosterone production, SHBG, and hormonal axis regulation change in parallel.

We should therefore not try to “remove estrogen”. It is necessary to maintain a body composition compatible with normal hormonal functioning.

Why is visceral fat more problematic?

Visceral fat is more lipolytic and more inflammatory than many subcutaneous deposits. It releases fatty acids and signaling molecules that participate in insulin resistance and systemic inflammation.

Its accumulation also accompanies the unfavorable hormonal profile observed in many men with obesity: lower testosterone, insulin resistance and adipose tissue dysfunction.

Waist measurement is therefore a useful benchmark. It does not directly measure visceral fat, but tracks abdominal adiposity better than an isolated weight.

How does fat change the face?

The face contains several deep subcutaneous fat compartments. When their volume increases, the contours become less visible: mandibular angle, cheekbones, chin and transition between face and neck.

The amount of fat visible on the face is linked to body adiposity, and facial adiposity influences judgments of attractiveness and health.

Losing fat can slim the cheeks, reduce volume under the chin and make the jawline stand out.

In some men, the face becomes thinner early. For others, the cheeks and under the chin remain among the last areas to lose volume.

Why can't we choose where to lose fat?

The mobilization of adipocytes varies depending on their location, their hormonal receptors, their vascularization and genetics.

The body cannot be asked to only remove fat from the cheeks or lower abdomen by training the muscles underneath. The energy deficit acts on all reserves, while the distribution of the loss is largely imposed by the body.

How to measure your fat level?

Impedance scales estimate body composition based on electrical conductivity. The result varies with hydration, meals and measurement conditions. They are better used to follow a trend than to determine whether someone is precisely at 13.2%.

Comparable photos, waist measurement, average weight over several days and muscle definition make for a more useful read when combined.

What rate should you look for for health?

There is no universal threshold where a man suddenly goes from healthy to unhealthy. Age, visceral fat, muscle mass, diet and activity also matter.

A zone around 12 to 20% is suitable for many active men. The risk increases with abdominal adiposity, visceral fat, insulin resistance and accompanying complications.

At the other extreme, going very low is not automatically dangerous, but maintaining a very low level through energy restriction can disrupt libido, mood, recovery, sleep and hormones.

What rate should you look for for aesthetics?

The 12 to 17% zone is a good compromise.

Around 15–17%, the size remains controlled and the musculature reads well without requiring a sharp push. Around 12–15%, muscle separation increases, the abdominals become more visible and the face can gain definition. Around 10–12%, the result becomes drier and the contours stand out more.

Going even lower does not automatically improve the appearance. In some men, the face loses volume and becomes more hollow. Hunger also often increases and maintenance becomes more restrictive.

What does evolutionary psychology say?

Adiposity can serve as an indirect index of health and energy availability. By this logic, too much fat can signal metabolic risk, while extremely low levels can signal low reserves or a difficult-to-maintain condition. An intermediate optimum is therefore more consistent than a rule according to which less fat is always better.

Some studies point in this direction. Work on male attractiveness finds a non-linear relationship between adiposity and attractiveness, with a maximum located in a relatively dry but not extreme zone. Other work also shows that facial adiposity influences both health and attractiveness judgments.

The face illustrates this logic well: removing excess fat can reveal the jawline, cheekbones and neck. Continuing shedding after this point can remove volume from the cheeks without improving proportions.

Why defend a rate a little higher than certain looksmaxxing standards?

The looksmaxxing and fitness standards often push towards 10–12%, sometimes less. This recommendation has a logic: the more subcutaneous fat decreases, the more visible the abs, muscle separations, jawline and cheekbones become.

But these benefits diminish as you go down. Going from 25 to 15% can significantly transform the face and body. Going from 12 to 9% produces a smaller change, while the stress can increase significantly.

A zone of 12–17% therefore defends another compromise: retaining most of the definition while maintaining more facial volume, energy availability and dietary freedom.

This doesn't mean a 10% man will be any less attractive. Certain faces and physiques work better at this level. This means that there is no strong biological reason to consider 8–10% a higher goal in principle.

Why can a very low rate still be valued?

A very lean man presents something rare and difficult to maintain: low body fat, controlled diet, regular training and consistency. In fitness or looksmaxxing circles, this difficulty can itself increase the value placed on the physique.

Rarity matters. An 8–10% physique may impress in part because it is unusual. The necessary discipline can also be interpreted as a signal of self-control, investment of time and status in groups where physical appearance is valued.

This social effect can shift standards toward levels of dryness lower than those that maximize health, comfort, or average attractiveness.

Why can being very dry end up being a problem?

The problem comes less from a precise figure than from the energy availability necessary to reach or maintain it.

In male athletes, insufficient energy availability is associated with reduced testosterone, libido, recovery and training capacity.

A genetically lean man, who eats enough and functions well, is therefore not in the same situation as a man maintaining the same rate through permanent hunger and aggressive restriction.

Useful indicators are libido, energy, sleep, mood, performance and ease of maintenance.

Why is 12–17% a good compromise?

The face becomes clearer, the neck-jaw separation increases, the size decreases and the musculature becomes visible. With enough muscle mass, the shoulder-waist contrast also increases.

The exact point then depends on the face. Some men will be better at 11–12%, others at 15–16%.

How to lose fat?

An energy deficit is required: consuming less energy than the body expends for long enough for reserves to decrease.

The deficit must remain compatible with bodybuilding, proteins and recovery. Slow loss facilitates the conservation of muscle mass and makes it possible to follow the evolution of the face.

Track the average weight over seven days rather than an isolated weigh-in. Water, glycogen, salt and digestive contents can shift weight without changing fat.

How to gain weight without becoming fat?

Use a limited energy surplus with progressive training.

If weight increases but performance and muscle mass progress little while the waistline rises quickly, too large a part of the surplus is stored as fat.

The point is not to maximize the speed of weight gain, but to create enough energy to build muscle without unnecessarily accumulating adipose tissue.

What about body recomposition?

It is possible to lose fat while gaining muscle, especially for beginners, people returning to training, and those with significant fat reserves.

As the training level increases and the fat percentage decreases, the more difficult it becomes to pursue both goals simultaneously. It then becomes easier to choose a dominant phase: lose fat or build muscle.

Weight alone can deceive: losing 3 kg of fat and gaining 3 kg of muscle does not change the weight, but significantly transforms the physique.

Which strategy to choose?

Use fat percentage as an area, not a number to be achieved to the nearest tenth.

For a man looking for aesthetics, 12–17% is a good starting point. Going down to 10–12% may be relevant if the face and physique improve further and if libido, energy, sleep and performance remain good.

Conversely, avoid letting your waistline and visceral fat increase. Adipose tissue is a hormonal organ: its excess changes the mirror, but also metabolism, inflammation and the male hormonal environment.

The optimum is therefore neither “the leanest possible” nor a universal figure. It is located at the point where face and body definition, health, energy and the ability to maintain level meet.
