Male heels: riding and prestige
Men's heels have a history linked to horse riding in Western Asia: their shape helped to hold the foot in the stirrup. Their adoption into European fashion subsequently associated these shoes with power and prestige. At the court of Louis XIV, red heels were one of the signs of privilege.
The extension becomes more discreet
As men's fashion evolved, high heels lost their place in many outfits, but the desire to add height remained. The Bata Shoe Museum shows how long pants could hide heels. Current interior elevation shoes and soles continue this search for less visible added height.
