NAC

How it works

Provide a glutathione precursor

Glutathione is made from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. NAC contributes to the availability of cysteine, which can limit this production in certain contexts. It is therefore not simply a matter of adding an unlimited layer of protection: the effect depends on the initial state, the use by the cells and the other elements necessary for the synthesis.

Act on glutamate regulation

Glutamate is an important neurotransmitter in the brain. NAC is studied in particular for its links with the exchange of cystine and glutamate between cells and their environment. These mechanisms can indirectly modify signal transmission. They provide insight into certain disorders, but do not demonstrate that taking it improves the attention or memory of a healthy person.

Different results depending on the compulsion

A randomized trial of 66 adults with compulsive skin scratching disorder observed improvement with NAC. Conversely, a phase III trial in 98 people with obsessive-compulsive disorder did not show any additional improvement compared to placebo. It is therefore necessary to distinguish the disorders, the protocols and the people concerned rather than promising general action on compulsions.

Concentration remains an uncertain promise

Cognitive research brings together very different situations, including illnesses and treatments combining several substances. Data specific to NAC in healthy participants are limited. A change in brain activity or an antioxidant marker does not prove better daily intellectual work. There is a lack of sufficiently robust results to recommend the NAC as a reliable concentration tool.

Effort and recovery

Sports trials sometimes observe changes in antioxidant or performance markers. A meta-analysis also notes an average reduction in certain measures of muscle aches and lactate after exercise. The protocols are heterogeneous, and modifying a marker does not guarantee better training progress. The NAC does not have the same place as well-established bases like a adapted protein intake.

GlyNAC and the promises of longevity

GlyNAC combines glycine and NAC. A small trial in older adults observed improvements in several markers and functional measures. It does not allow us to attribute all the effects to NAC alone, nor to conclude that skin is younger or that life is prolonged in a healthy adult. A result on markers of aging is not proof of extension of human life.
