Toothbrushing
Summary
Brushing does two complementary things: the bristles of the brush remove plaque, while the fluoride in toothpaste helps protect teeth against cavities. Brush for two minutes, twice a day, including once before bed. For an adult, choose a toothpaste around 1,450 to 1,500 ppm fluoride and a soft brush, manual or electric, that you can pass over all sides of the teeth.
Add cleaning between the teeth once a day: brushes when spaces allow, floss for tighter contacts. After brushing, spit out excess toothpaste without rinsing with water. Softness and consistency are more important than brush strength or price. If your gums bleed often, if pain occurs, or if a tooth becomes sensitive, have the cause checked by a dentist.
