Bimatoprost
History
2002: Lumigan authorized in the European Union
Bimatoprost was first developed as a treatment for intraocular pressure. Lumigan received European authorization in March 2002 for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Eyelash growth is among the effects observed with this type of treatment: a secondary change in appearance thus becomes an avenue for another use.
2008: a specific indication for eyelashes
In December 2008, the FDA approved Latisse in the United States for eyelash hypotrichosis. The file is based on dedicated tests and on application to the edge of the eyelid. This step distinguishes a studied therapeutic indication from a simple cosmetic diversion, without giving the drug the same authorization in all countries.
Growth serums and their limits
Interest in eyelash growth has also been accompanied by cosmetic serums containing other prostaglandin analogs. In its final opinion of 2026, the European scientific committee SCCS considers that none of the three analogues it evaluates can be considered safe in cosmetic products intended to promote the growth of eyelashes and eyebrows. This scientific advice should not be confused with a general ban on all serums.
