Bimatoprost

Summary

Effectiveness

1/3

Bimatoprost actually makes eyelashes grow, but its aesthetic benefit remains limited by risks to the eyes, including potentially permanent browning of the iris. This is why we give it a rating of 1/3.

Accessibility

1/3

Access, approved uses and available formulations differ by country. Eyelash treatment requires an appropriate prescription product and medical monitoring; glaucoma drops are not automatically suitable for cosmetic use.

Bimatoprost is a medicine that can make eyelashes longer, fuller and darker. In the United States, Latisse 0.03% is approved for eyelash hypotrichosis, which is insufficiently developed eyelashes. Improvement takes several weeks to several months and fades after stopping. We do not recommend it as a first intention to beautify normal eyelashes.

Bimatoprost is used in prescription treatments for high pressure inside the eye. Some countries also authorize a specific preparation for eyelash hypotrichosis; this does not make every glaucoma drop suitable for eyelash use. Discuss locally approved options with a clinician. Bimatoprost can permanently darken the iris, irritate the eyes, darken the eyelids or deepen their contours. Eyelash grooming is a simpler option if the concern is only the direction of the lashes.
