Mewing
How it works
The tongue is part of the balance of the mouth
The tongue is involved in swallowing, speaking and resting postures. Its relationships with teeth and other muscles are studied in orthodontics and rehabilitation. This gives real interest to the oral function, but does not transform every tongue position into a method of facial sculpting. The context and the problem addressed are as important as the instructions themselves.
Growth changes the question
In a still growing person, the structures of the face develop while the functions of the mouth interact with them. Treatments may combine devices, exercises and respiratory support. A result obtained in this context therefore does not prove that an adult could obtain the same development by simply placing their tongue against the roof of their mouth.
Visible posture and lasting change
The position of the mouth and head can modify the appearance of the profile at a given moment. A lasting change in bone shape requires another demonstration: comparable measurements over time and a method to isolate the effect of the practice. Testimonials and photos published online are not sufficient to establish this mechanism in adults.
Rehabilitation is not a general aesthetic promise
Myofunctional therapy uses exercises adapted to specific disorders, sometimes in addition to orthodontic or surgical treatment. Some work reports functional benefits, but the protocols and patients are very different from mewing practiced alone. This research cannot promise a wider jawline or a more advanced chin for everyone.
A habit different from muscular work
Mewing is not about developing masseters like a muscle trained against resistance. Keeping a relaxed jaw at rest and seeking to gain muscle volume are two distinct goals. For appearance, it is therefore more accurate to evaluate mewing as an oral presentation habit with limited effect, rather than as a training capable of reconstructing facial proportions.
